Earning your keep...
One of the major problems with the world is that people think that they can reach a point in the ladder of success where they can just give up. Where life will be easier, and they can just coast. We have set up a society that works toward that goal. Hell, it is factored into the American Dream.
The problem with that logic, is that it creates a situation in which mid to upper level management becomes negligent, and everybody suffers. Whether it be the military or a corporation in the civilian world, the effects are essentially the same.
Take for instance the military. People that wish to make a carrer out of the navy desire to move up the ranks as quickly as possible. Once they reach a mid level posistion however, they get a mindset that it is ok to stop living up to that higher calling. People in companies seek promotions that will give them a posistion in mid to upper level management. Once they get that they think that it is ok, to slack off and not live up to what they have become.
You should live your life every day with the mindset that you want to improve. If you earn a higher posistion, you are not then allowed to slack off. Yes, there has to be insentives in place that will make those posistions desirable, but the point is, if you stop doing what you did to earn a posistion once you get the posistion, then you are no longer entitled to have that posistion. One of the biggest problems with society is people not living up to the posistions that they have earned.

the biggest problem with americans in the workforce isnt coasting... its a lack of efficiency apparent in all levels of position. sadly, most of the blame falls on the ever-messed-up legal system filled with red tape, beaurocracies, and sludge. there's a very real possibility that medication exists today that could prevent a multitude of disease but because it hasnt gone through years of humanless testing, it wont be allowed to save lives simply because the FDA has a strangle-hold over the medical industry. i could continue for days with examples of industry being bum-fucked by the screwy legal system here in america but i'll spare the details to make my point... seek legal reform and industry will correct itself!
